A capacidade de identificar quais beb\u00eas est\u00e3o em risco de apresentarem um resultado de desenvolvimento deficiente \u00e9 fundamental para desenvolver interven\u00e7\u00f5es destinadas a mitigar tais desfechos adversos. Cerca de um ter\u00e7o dos beb\u00eas prematuros nascidos com menos de 30 semanas de gesta\u00e7\u00e3o apresentar\u00e3o um d\u00e9ficit de desenvolvimento at\u00e9 os 2 anos de idade. A ferramenta utilizada para identificar essas crian\u00e7as inclui fatores m\u00e9dicos e biol\u00f3gicos (como epigen\u00e9ticos) e neurocomportamental. As Escalas de Neurocomportamento Neonatal (NNNS) podem ser utilizadas para identificar perfis neurocomportamentais t\u00edpicos e at\u00edpicos durante a estadia do beb\u00ea na UTI neonatal. Esses perfis, juntamente com fatores m\u00e9dicos e epigen\u00e9ticos, preveem d\u00e9ficits de desenvolvimento em beb\u00eas prematuros aos 2 anos de idade e podem ser utilizados para identificar quais beb\u00eas individuais apresentam maior risco de apresentar um resultado de desenvolvimento deficiente. Os NNNS tamb\u00e9m podem ser utilizados como parte do cuidado cl\u00ednico padr\u00e3o para lactentes expostos a medicamentos e para lactentes pr\u00e9-termo, para complementar o tratamento desses lactentes no NICU, facilitar a participa\u00e7\u00e3o dos pais e identificar objetivos neurocomportamentais para o cuidado ap\u00f3s o alta hospitalar e encaminhamento. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Barry Lester \u00e9 Professor de Psiquiatria, Professor de Pediatria e Diretor fundador do Centro de Estudo de Crian\u00e7as em Risco na Faculdade de Medicina Alpert da Universidade Brown e no Hospital Women and Infants. O Centro inclui pesquisa, servi\u00e7os cl\u00ednicos e treinamento. O Dr. Lester tem um interesse antigo em mapear as for\u00e7as biol\u00f3gicas e sociais que impulsionam o desenvolvimento em crian\u00e7as em risco e na detec\u00e7\u00e3o precoce dessas crian\u00e7as em pesquisa e na pr\u00e1tica cl\u00ednica. A pesquisa atual no Centro inclui tr\u00eas estudos longitudinais em v\u00e1rios locais que envolvem a melhoria do diagn\u00f3stico de beb\u00eas com S\u00edndrome de Abstin\u00eancia Neonatal (NAS), a detec\u00e7\u00e3o precoce de beb\u00eas em risco de autismo e preditores neurocomportamentais e epigen\u00e9ticos do resultado do desenvolvimento em beb\u00eas pr\u00e9-termo. A coorte de prematuros do Dr. Lester tamb\u00e9m faz parte do programa ECHO (Environmental Influences on Child Health Outcomes) do NIH, que envolve 35 coortes pedi\u00e1tricas e mais de 45.000 crian\u00e7as. A pesquisa de Lester foi continuamente financiada pelo NIH ao longo de sua carreira. Ele esteve fortemente envolvido no processo de revis\u00e3o por pares do NIH, tendo atuado em diversas se\u00e7\u00f5es de estudos do NIH, no Conselho Consultivo Nacional do NIH sobre Abuso de Drogas, no Comit\u00ea Diretor do Conselho Consultivo Nacional sobre Abuso de Drogas, no Programa de Pr\u00eamio Pioneiro do Diretor do NIH e no Col\u00e9gio do Centro de Revis\u00e3o Cient\u00edfica.
