{"id":818,"date":"2025-05-28T19:48:34","date_gmt":"2025-05-28T19:48:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/msbrazelton.wpenginepowered.com\/?page_id=818"},"modified":"2026-06-02T19:28:38","modified_gmt":"2026-06-02T19:28:38","slug":"when-night-fills-with-premature-exits","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/brazeltoninstitute.childrenshospital.org\/es\/nbi-community\/poetry-and-practice\/when-night-fills-with-premature-exits\/","title":{"rendered":"When Night Fills with Premature Exits"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Chosen by Constance Keefer<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the timing for this poem this month is very appropriate, I believe, and even hope, that this issue, in a word &#8211; racism &#8211; will be an appropriate topic now and into the future, until some real change is wrought.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c\u2018When Night Fills with Premature Exits\u2019 was inspired by a meditation on Public Enemy\u2019s&nbsp;Fear of a Black Planet&nbsp;and the idea that Black people cannot conceive a world, even a different planet, where they are not feared. The \u2018premature exits\u2019 referred to in the title echo a lifelong sentiment that we die at too fast and at too high of a rate, especially as Black men, because we are not deemed worthy of being free or carefree and because those who target us, as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/poets.org\/poet\/claudia-rankine\">Claudia Rankine<\/a>&nbsp;eloquently puts it, have a hard time policing their imagination. The poem is written in the form of questions because I am on a daily quest for the answers myself, especially as the father of two beautifully radiant sons.
