Reflection, such a powerful component of our work with babies and those caring for them.&nbsp; Aptly named, for surely we see ourselves reflected in the face of the baby or the parent caring for the baby as we share our thoughts and feelings with someone trusted to hold them.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My journey as an infant mental health home visitor took me on adventures, unanticipated, some pleasant and others, not so.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;The memories came slowly, bits and pieces at a time, or in a rush, all at once, the blue of the eyes, the rosiness of the cheeks, the way the baby\u2019s fingers grasped that of the mother, the tears that fell.&nbsp; Past awakened in the present by the baby\u2019s longings for care and stories told. &nbsp;My past, my present, other babies, other families. &nbsp;&nbsp;Each home visiting experience offered an opportunity \u2013 quite unexpected \u2013 to remember someone or something, a joyous moment, a birthday or a painful loss, longing, grief.&nbsp; Unannounced, these memories tumbled out with force in the quiet of a supervisory hour.&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The written word following reflective supervision offered me comfort, sometimes bringing new understanding of the intertwining of personal and professional in this work with babies and allowed me to return, knock on a family\u2019s door and begin the journey again.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">PLEASURES\u2026 Written on Mother\u2019s Day<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By Deborah Weatherston<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>there are first smiles<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>there are first games \u2013 patty cake and peek-a-boo<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>there are the pleasures of parents who can hold their children<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; comfortably on their laps<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>there is the delight of an infant\u2019s first tooth<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>there is the adventure of an infant\u2019s first step<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>there are lovely stories of<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; grandmother\u2019s care,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; trips to the country,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; holidays past,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; celebrations on Mother\u2019s Day<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>there are first birthday cakes and presents<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>there are family albums, collections of people,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; past and present<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>there are stories of aunts and uncles<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; families<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>there are longings for attachment and wishes that<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; life might be less lonely<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>there are cries for comfort<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>there are lullabies and blankets<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; fingers curled around a mother\u2019s hand<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>there are gestures of affection<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; expressions of joy<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>I startle<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>how often have I, in moments of pleasure<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; remembered other babies<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; cheeks like roses<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; skin as soft as kitten\u2019s fur<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; smocked dresses<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; round faces<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; smiles and games<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; grandmother\u2019s care<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; first birthdays<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; whose pleasures?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; whose nursery?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>I smile<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>how often have I in the intimacy<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Retired, Executive Director, Alliance for the Advancement of Infant Mental Health. Dr. Weatherston received her Ph.D. in Education, Sociology, and Psychology from Wayne State University. Her post-graduate work includes a Graduate Certificate in Infant Mental Health. She is a licensed social worker and holds an Infant Mental Health Mentor endorsement. Dr. Weatherston co-founded the <a href=\"safari-reader:\/\/mpsi.wayne.edu\/training\/infant-health\">Interdisciplinary Graduate Certificate Program in Infant Mental Health<\/a> at the Merrill Palmer Institute (now Merrill Palmer Skillman Institute) in 1988 and served as its Director until 2004.
