The Sandstone Cathedral<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The grandeur of a slot canyon<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

cannot escape the eye<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Its towering walls,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

gentle curves,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

and portholes,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

allow ribbons of light<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

to cascade<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

down waves of stone<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

like tiny waterfalls<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

 <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A golden glow paints the walls<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

the warm tones of a sunset,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

pale yellow,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

peachy pink,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

orange cream,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

and dark chocolate<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

 <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is a sandstone cathedral<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A majestic site<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

which inspires<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

wonder,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

curiosity,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

and awe<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

 <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Like holding a baby<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

for the first time,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am inspired to notice<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

everything!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

 <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A baby\u2019s behavior is it\u2019s language,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

and you can trust that language,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

said Dr. Brazelton<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Using the Newborn Behavioral Observation System,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

known as the NBO,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

to nurture connections<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

between parents and babies,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am enlightened by the hands that created it<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

and those who teach it<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The baby whisperers of our time,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

both past and present<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

 <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Armed with a red ball, a small rattle, and a flashlight,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

a willing parent, and a baby, 3 months or younger<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I use my powers of observation, the NBO, and parent report<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

to answer questions, such as<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Can this baby track faces and\/or objects?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Does this baby look in the direction of a familiar voice?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Can she protect her sleep?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is this baby\u2019s temperament? Is she easy going or hypersensitive?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

 <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

How does this baby express herself?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

What helps her relax?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

How does she interpret her world?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

How do her parents respond to, and interpret her behaviors?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

 <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

 <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am also curious to know<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

how this mother is feeling<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is she happy and tired,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

and able to appreciate<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

her baby\u2019s shining eyes<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

soft skin<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

and tiny toes?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Does she notice when her baby<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

looks for her voice,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

gazes in her direction,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

or smiles at her reflexively?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

 <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or is this mom<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

anxious, withdrawn, and\/or sad?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Life with a baby is not what she expected<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

She is exhausted and overwhelmed<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

She has not yet been able to sweep aside<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

her invisible veil of depression,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

to notice her own strengths<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

or her baby\u2019s gifts<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

She is not sure how things will go<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

 <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Again, I ask myself,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

How can I work with this family<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

to nurture their relationships,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

recognize their strengths,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

and help them address their baby\u2019s needs?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

 <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The NBO provides us with<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

precious opportunities<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

to listen,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

observe,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

ask questions,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

share insights,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

and teach and learn from parents<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

 <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The lessons from the NBO<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

can help build bridges of understanding and connection<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

between caretakers and babies,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

caretakers and clinicians,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

babies and their siblings,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

and families and extended families<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

 <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

When using the NBO,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

we can play an important role<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

in providing opportunities<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

for parents<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

to tell us their stories about their babies,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

their families,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

their culture,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

their hopes and dreams,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

and their fears<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

 <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

When using the NBO,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

we have the privilege<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

of meeting families where they are<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

and creating a nurturing atmosphere<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

filled with smiles,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

kindness,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

humor,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

wonder,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

and compassion<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

 <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

When using the NBO,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

we have the opportunity<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

to educate families<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

and provide them with<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

strategies and resources<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

to address their baby\u2019s needs<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

 <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

When using the NBO,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

we have the ability<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

to inspire caretakers<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

to open their eyes to new possibilities,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

to recognize and appreciate their gifts,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

to create micro moments of connection,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

and to give caretakers<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

the wings to fly<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

towards the sunsets<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

of their hopes and dreams.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>

Reflection<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In the summer of 2019, our family toured secret antelope canyon, a beautiful slot canyon on a Navajo Indian reservation in Page, Arizona.  The sun was bright, the sky was blue, and it was hot.  We climbed into an open air bus with an English couple, an Italian family, and 2 expert tour guides. After a bumpy ride and a short hike through the desert, we arrived at the canyon entrance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

 Beautifully carved sandstone walls stood before us. Entering a narrow passage, I  noticed golden beams of sunlight cascading down the rocks like tiny waterfalls. As we walked towards the heart of the canyon, the walls glowed like the hues of a sunset.   The ridged layers of sandstone were smooth to the touch. The air was cool.  I felt as if I had entered one of nature\u2019s cathedrals, a magnificent and holy place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As we walked deeper into the canyon, we spotted a lone grasshopper, an eagle\u2019s nest, and spider webs clinging to a wall.  Our guide pulled out his recorder and began to play a traditional Navajo song. The spiritual music rippled through the canyon like a soothing melody.  Listening, I paused, looked around, and wondered, \u201cHow have desert rains transformed this canyon over hundreds of years?  If I could watch the sun light up this canyon from dawn to dusk, what would I see?   If these walls could talk, what stories would they tell?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Seeing this canyon and using the Newborn Behavioral Observation System (NBO) with families and babies, has filled me with a sense of awe, fine tuned my powers of observation, and challenged me to ask new questions about how nature is transformed over time by its environment. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the last 10 years, I have had the opportunity to attend, and occasionally organize, wonderful lectures on early child development, early brain development, infant-parent mental health, and on social interactions between babies, young children, and their caretakers.  I consider myself blessed to have heard so many incredible speakers, including Dr. Berry Brazelton, Dr. Kevin Nugent, Dr. Jayne Singer,  Dr. Ed Tronick,  Dr. Claudia Gold, Dr. Alice Carter, Dr. Charles Nelson, Dr. Takao Hensch, Dr. Patricia Kuhl, Dr. Jack Shonkoff, and many others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a speech-language pathologist in early intervention, I have primarily helped families help their 2 year-olds, who have speech delays or complex medical issues, learn to understand language and communicate in ways that their caretakers understand.  When I became trained in the NBO, a few months before COVID swept across the country, I had the opportunity to help parents learn more about how to recognize and understand their babies cues, behaviors, and patterns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The knowledge I have developed through attending lectures and trainings, watching videos, reading, and working as a speech-language pathologist in early intervention, has created a rich backdrop for using the NBO professionally with families.  Working with the NBO has challenged me to consider different perspectives, and repeatedly ask myself the questions, \u201cWhat are this family\u2019s strengths?  How is this baby responding to her environment?  How does this baby express herself?  How are this baby\u2019s caretakers interpreting her behaviors? Is there anything I can do to inspire micro moments of connection and understanding between this baby and her parents?  Are there any resources I could provide or point to that would be helpful in addressing this family\u2019s needs?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Overall, it has been a pleasure to work with families and babies with the NBO in early intervention.   I hope that the ideas of those who have made important discoveries about babies, baby-caretaker interactions, and infant-parent mental health, will continue to inspire authors, researchers, teachers, therapists, and parents to collaborate.  By working together, we will help future generations of families with young babies, overcome their challenges, and step towards fulfilling their hopes and dreams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
