Written on 3rd December 2020<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Seeing a baby<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Emerge, she said<\/p>\n\n\n\n

let your personality shine forth<\/p>\n\n\n\n

as she shone the light<\/p>\n\n\n\n

to elicit your habituation response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Come closer, she said<\/p>\n\n\n\n

as she pulled you to sit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your response was a revelation<\/p>\n\n\n\n

of how you responded to this situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I called your name<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and as your turned towards my voice<\/p>\n\n\n\n

the smile on your face and mine<\/p>\n\n\n\n

will remain in multiple hearts for life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

With a flick of your arm<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and a turn of your head<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You began to reveal your story<\/p>\n\n\n\n

by your actions and what you said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Love in the room expanded<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and worries and fears regressed,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

as with each step of the NBO<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your capabilities professed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I saw what I had not seen before,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The NBO opened a door<\/p>\n\n\n\n

for me and a window<\/p>\n\n\n\n

into your world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

You cried incessantly,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was tense<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I touched your hand<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your response calmed me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thank you for sharing<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and increasing my learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Insights revealed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your wonder flowing forth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

AMOR morphed<\/p>\n\n\n\n

into increasing amour<\/p>\n\n\n\n

as You grasped my finger<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You enslaved my heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

My love poured out<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spilling everywhere<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am in Heaven<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I love you<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reflection<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

What led me to write this poem was the sense of excitement I felt on completion of the NBO training in December 2020 with Kevin and Yvette. Whenever, I am excited I am inspired to write poetry. It flows easily and captures what significant events mean to me. The course was wonderful and awoke in me an awareness of each baby\u2019s individual personality. It also emphasised that relationship is so important when caring for babies. I became aware of Infant Mental Health through my work with Catherine Maguire, IMH Specialist, Cork, Ireland in 2016. Catherine\u2019s expertise was admirable and her enthusiasm in this area was contagious. Doing the NBO course with 29 people from all around Ireland who were so passionate about infant wellbeing and nurturance was a privilege. I dedicate this poem to all babies who deserve the very best life has to offer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cathy O\u2019 Sullivan is the Director of the Centre of Midwifery Education at Cork University Maternity Hospital in Southern Ireland. She has been involved in midwifery education for almost 30 years. She has a Master\u2019s Degree in Midwifery Education. She is passionately interested in preparing parents realistically for labour, birth and the transition to parenthood. She is one of the authors of Ireland\u2019s National Standards for Antenatal education which was published<\/a> in March 2020. She was involved in the development of the HSE website www.mychild.ie<\/a> in 2018. She is one of the authors of the My Pregnancy Book<\/a>, which is offered to all expectant mothers at their first antenatal visit in Ireland.
