La Dra. Heidelise Als es investigadora y cl\u00ednica, preocupada por el neurodesarrollo de los reci\u00e9n nacidos a t\u00e9rmino, de alto riesgo y prematuros, el papel fundamental de sus padres en sus primeras vidas fuera del \u00fatero, as\u00ed como los efectos del entorno y de la atenci\u00f3n de los profesionales en entornos de cuidados m\u00e9dicos intensivos para dichos reci\u00e9n nacidos. Su objetivo es mejorar el futuro de todos los reci\u00e9n nacidos y especialmente de aquellos nacidos prematuramente y\/o con desaf\u00edos especiales que requieren cuidados m\u00e9dicos intensivos, y de sus familias.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
La Dra. Als es la creadora del Programa Individualizado y Neonatal de Cuidado y Evaluaci\u00f3n del Desarrollo (NIDCAP, por sus siglas en ingl\u00e9s) y directora del primer programa de capacitaci\u00f3n en este enfoque basado en una Unidad de Cuidados Intensivos Neonatales (UCIN), el Centro Nacional de Capacitaci\u00f3n NIDCAP. Tambi\u00e9n es la creadora de la Evaluaci\u00f3n del Comportamiento de Lactantes Prematuros (APIB, por sus siglas en ingl\u00e9s), publicada en 1982, basada en la Escala de Evaluaci\u00f3n del Comportamiento Neonatal de Brazelton (1973) y como una expansi\u00f3n de la misma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
En 2001, fund\u00f3 la Federaci\u00f3n Internacional NIDCAP (NFI, por sus siglas en ingl\u00e9s), una organizaci\u00f3n ben\u00e9fica cuya misi\u00f3n es garantizar el cuidado NIDCAP para todos los reci\u00e9n nacidos y familias del mundo. Su propia investigaci\u00f3n y la de otros han documentado una mejora significativa en los resultados de salud y neurodesarrollo de los lactantes prematuros, as\u00ed como una mayor confianza y competencia de los padres de aquellos que recibieron el cuidado NIDCAP en comparaci\u00f3n con el cuidado convencional orientado a tareas y horarios. Su trabajo ha cambiado la formaci\u00f3n y la educaci\u00f3n del personal, as\u00ed como el dise\u00f1o y la atenci\u00f3n brindada en las UCIN en los EE.
