La capacidad de identificar qu\u00e9 beb\u00e9s corren el riesgo de un resultado de desarrollo desfavorable es clave para desarrollar intervenciones que mitiguen dichos resultados adversos. Aproximadamente un tercio de los lactantes prematuros nacidos con menos de 30 semanas de gestaci\u00f3n presentar\u00e1n un d\u00e9ficit de desarrollo a los 2 a\u00f1os de edad. El conjunto de herramientas para identificar a estos ni\u00f1os incluye factores m\u00e9dicos y biol\u00f3gicos (p. ej., epigen\u00e9ticos) y la neuroconducta. Las Escalas Neuroconductuales Neonatales (NNNS) se pueden utilizar para identificar perfiles neuroconductuales t\u00edpicos y at\u00edpicos discretos durante la estancia del lactante en la UCIN. Barry Lester es profesor de Psiquiatr\u00eda, profesor de Pediatr\u00eda y director fundador del Centro para el Estudio de Ni\u00f1os en Riesgo de la Escuela de Medicina Alpert de la Universidad Brown y del Hospital de Mujeres y Beb\u00e9s (Women and Infants Hospital). El Centro incluye investigaci\u00f3n, servicios cl\u00ednicos y formaci\u00f3n. El Dr. Lester ha mantenido un inter\u00e9s de larga data en trazar el mapa de las fuerzas biol\u00f3gicas y sociales que impulsan el desarrollo en ni\u00f1os en riesgo y la detecci\u00f3n temprana de estos ni\u00f1os en la investigaci\u00f3n y la pr\u00e1ctica cl\u00ednica. La investigaci\u00f3n actual en el Centro incluye tres estudios longitudinales multic\u00e9ntricos que implican la mejora del diagn\u00f3stico de los lactantes con S\u00edndrome de Abstinencia Neonatal (SAN), la detecci\u00f3n temprana de lactantes en riesgo de autismo y los predictores neuroconductuales y epigen\u00e9ticos del resultado del desarrollo en lactantes prematuros.
