Reflection by Normand Carrey<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is a very special poem- you kinda know that when you write it, as it came out nearly all formed. I was shovelling snow after a storm here – it shows that this material is right there “under the skin\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shovelling Memere’s Walkway For Two Dollars <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aunt Pauline gave me their wedding photo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You could already read the defiance on her face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some lessons never, never leave you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where does she live?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I said pardon me?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where does she inhabit you?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Up there, in the barren lands of the Arctic tundra<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Permafrosted into the meninge of the thinking<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And perceiving organ. You damn well remember.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You live and re-live that square-tiled walkway,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The wet snow stuck to the back of the aluminum shovel,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The crisp two dollar bill she handed you once satisfied<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The job was well done followed by the milk and oatmeal cookies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ah those warm oatmeal cookies! Afterwards in the drawing room<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sitting across from each other, in the dress she had stitched<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Years earlier, in the silence that danced between the two of us. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Normand Carrey is a just retired infant-child-adolescent psychiatrist, Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Dalhouise University, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada and Consultant to the Nurse Family Partnership.
